Insomnia is one of the most common sleep complaints of patients presenting to primary care physicians. Treatment has been facilitated by evidence obtained from rigorously controlled studies evaluating the risks and benefits of pharmacological treatment options over long durations and in patients with conditions commonly comorbid with insomnia. Studies in elderly and pediatric patient populations are still lacking, which may lead to suboptimal treatment in these groups.
