Since the discovery of the hypocretin/orexin system approximately 15 years ago, much has been learned about its role in the regulation of sleep and wake.
Emphasizing midlife women, this review describes sleep and compares self-report sleep data with objective findings from laboratory studies of women. Sleep disturbance is a more prevalent complaint for women than men.
In addition to pain, patients with fibromyalgia often report sleep disturbances. Studies have shown that abnormal sleep patterns in fibromyalgia are characterized by delayed onset, decreased efficiency, and reduced slow wave and rapid eye movement sleep.
The purpose of this review is to improve our understanding of the causes and consequences of nonadherence to PAP therapy and highlight interventions that promote adherence.
Findings from population studies evaluating the progression and incidence of sleep disordered breathing have shown evidence of a longitudinal increase in the severity of sleep disordered breathing.
Approximately 50% of older adults complain of difficulty sleeping. Poor sleep results in increased risk of significant morbidity and mortality.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common chronic disorder that often requires lifelong care. Available practice parameters provide evidence-based recommendations for addressing aspects of care.
