Insights from ongoing clinical research continue to shape discussions on improving the classification of insomnia for inclusion in the DSM-V, which the American Psychiatric Association projects to be released in 2012. Meanwhile, there remain important clinical considerations that may facilitate the diagnosis of insomnia and formulation of therapeutic plans. Treatment options include pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy used alone or in combination. Outcomes should address improved sleep onset and other nighttime variables, as well as such daytime parameters as cognitive impairment.
