Exploring Sickle Cell Disease and Associated Sleep Disorders

Sickle cell disease is characterized in part by cognitive dysfunction and other symptoms commonly observed in patients with sleep disorders, suggesting a potential link. Investigation of sleep disorders in children finds that sickle cell disease is associated with excessive sleepiness, impaired concentration, and other symptoms and signs suggestive of such common sleep/wake disorders as obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and insomnia.
